Incandescent light bulb

Incandescent light bulb is an electric bulb which produces light with a filament wire heated to a high temperature by an electric current passing through it, until it glows. In this method, incandescent bulbs convert a small percentage of the energy they use into visible light, with the remaining energy being converted into heat.

Generally, an incandescent light bulb converts about 15-20 lumen/watts of electrical power into visible light and has an average lifetime of 1,000 hours. The main benefit of this light bulb is that it has low manufacturing costs.

Fluorescent tube

Fluorescent tube is a gas discharge lamp that uses an electric arc through vapourised mercury, which excites the mercury vapour. The excited mercury atoms produce short-wave ultraviolet light which then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible white light.

Although there is some energy wasted in the process of converting electrical power into ultraviolet light, a fluorescent tube is more efficient than an incandescent light bulb. When comparing both technologies using the same wattage, a fluorescent tube converts electrical power into useful light more efficiently than an incandescent light bulb. A fluorescent tube converts electrical power into visible light at about 50-100 lumen/watts and has an average lifetime of 10,000 hours.

Advantages of LED light bulbs

LED light bulbs have no glass tubes to break and their internal parts are rigidly supported, making them resistant to vibration and impact.

Average rated life of 80,000-100,000 hours, which is much longer than both a fluorescent tube and an incandescent light bulb.

LED light bulbs are much smaller. Therefore they are interchangeable for various uses.

LED light bulbs produce low heat while in use; it can be touched without burning your skin.

LED light bulbs are suitable for applications which require being able to be instantly turned on and off, and that lifetime is unaffected by how many times it is turned on and off, unlike fluorescent tubes.

LED light bulbs contain no mercury, unlike fluorescent tubes.

Disadvantages of LED light bulbs

The cost of LED light bulbs is expensive. On some Thai websites, the price of LED light bulbs is Baht 200 per 18 x 1.3 watt LED light bulbs, while one x 3 watt white light LED light bulb costs Baht 680.

LED light bulbs are less effective in emitting visible light compared to fluorescent tubes.

LED light bulbs have a low colour rendering index (CRI).

The technology of producing white LED light bulbs is complex and they are less effective in emitting visible light compared to fluorescent tubes. However, the development of the technology of semiconductors, as well as other engineering technologies, is improving rapidly. Therefore, we can be assured that the white light LED light bulbs would be more efficient than fluorescent tubes. The price is also lower, making them more affordable for everyone to switch to LEDs in the near future. Once we switch to LEDs, electricity bills will certainly reduce.
